Do you think you have low self-esteem? Self-esteem not only means confidence in one’s self although confidence plays the bigger part. There are many confident people who do great things but have very poor self-esteem. Esteem in Latin means ‘to estimate’ therefore self-esteem is really how you regard or estimate yourself.
How do you know if you have low self-esteem?
Most people who don’t have high regard for themselves have the one or more of these feelings:
- They don’t feel like they like their own selves.
- They don’t think that they are good human beings.
- They don’t feel like they deserve to be loved.
- They don’t feel like they deserve to be happy.
- They don’t think that they are an OK person.
How can you improve your self-esteem?
If you feel any of the above and you think that you need to increase your confidence in yourself, here are some tips on how to improve your self esteem:
Focus on your achievements.
It does not matter whether your achievements are small or large, the important thing is that you recognize the efforts you’ve exerted to reach that goal. Focus on what your accomplishments meant to you and what were the things that drove you to achieve them.
Focus on the positive aspects of your life that make living worthwhile. Avoid dwelling on negative experiences, rather accept your mistakes and learn from them. There are so many ways for you to turn your negative experiences into positive ones – it’s just a matter of outlook.
Focus on what you like about yourself.
Evaluate your personality and come up with good things that you like about yourself. You can also include the things that your friends like about you. Don’t focus on the things that you do not like about yourself, rather, come up with constructive ways to change them. If there is something that cannot be changed, learn to accept it as part of your being.
Love yourself for who you are.
If you have a physical or mental disability, accept the fact that you cannot change it. By accepting who you are despite your disabilities, you will learn to ignore what others may say and in the process increase your confidence in yourself. Focus on the positive aspects of yourself i.e. your ability to love and care for others, your personality and your ability to be a good friend.
Don’t be your own negative critic.
If there’s that tiny voice within you that keeps on pointing out the negative aspects of your life, it’s time to vanquish it and make way for a more positive voice that offers helpful and constructive criticism.
Choose your friends.
Do not surround yourself with negative people because they can affect your feelings. Associate with positive, supportive friends who can provide a nurturing environment for you and help improve your self-esteem.
Never compare yourself to others.
In this life, there will always be people who have more than you but then, there are also others who have less than you. Give importance to what you already have and nurture what you can do well.
You have your own positive qualities, focus on them.
Creativeness, communication skills, honesty, helpfulness, unselfishness and the ability to care for others are traits that not everybody possesses. If you have these, treasure them.
Have a place and time for relaxation.
Your home can be your sanctuary from the rest of the busy world. You can surround yourself with your favorite music, books and good friends. You need a place where you can spend some quiet time alone to reflect on your goals and achievements.
Learn to forgive yourself.
It is easier to receive pardon from another person than from one’s own self. Try not to be too hard on yourself because this could lead to you developing poor self-esteem. If you have not achieved a goal you have set for yourself, readjust your goals so you can meet them. By having the right attitude, you can turn any negative experience to a positive one.
